62nd Annual Niagara Wine Festival

wineIt’s that time of year again! No, not back to school time and no not end of summer… it’s Niagara Wine Festival! Entering it’s 62nd year, this festival helps Niagara locals and visitors celebrate Niagara’s pride and joy; our wine!

As always, there will be Discovery Passes available for purchase for $40, which allows you to discover what each winery has to offer. Throughout the festival, the wineries have paired their favourite wines with some delectable dishes! The Discovery Pass can be used Saturdays and Sundays from September 14th to 29th. It’s a great opportunity to visit some wineries that you’ve never been to before or revisit a few of your favourites.

This year, I’d like to give a shout out to Creekside Winery, with their Roasty-Toasty pairing. A guest chef at the Best Western Plus Cairn Croft Hotel for our Robbie Burns Celebration, Chef J. Mark Hand has created a roasted heirloom tomato and basil “margarita” tarte with crumbled Ontario Farmer’s cheeses, paired with Creekside’s barrel-aged 2011 Cab Shiraz and 2008 Reserve Pinot Noir. Sounds delicious! Good job Mark!wine3

wine4Another fun event that caught my eye was the Picnic In The Vineyard at Cattail Creek Estate Winery. For only $15/person, you can enjoy a picnic basket filled with assortments of meats, cheeses and antipastos, along with some home-made cookies for dessert. Of course, all of this will be complimented with a glass of wine, surrounded by a beautiful vineyard.  Guys! Here’s a hint… this is really romantic.

wine5And what Niagara Wine Festival blog post would be complete without mention of the big party that goes on in Montebello Park, starting on September 20th- 22nd and again 27th-29th. Lots of delicious food vendors, amazing wine displays and fun entertainment too! Friday, September 27th, the Caverners will be playing from 8-10:30pm, another Best Western Plus Cairn Croft connection… who have played live from The Croft Lounge! For a full list of Montebello Park’s lineup, check out their website.

Loudmouth Golf Skins Game

Two weeks ago, you may have noticed a few people walking around Niagara with the loudest golf shorts you’ve ever seen! The Loudmouth Golf Skins Game was being held at Thundering Waters on July 23rd, with John Daly playing in a game the next day. The Best Western Plus Cairn Croft Hotel was the official hotel for the event and was even represented on the first whole by some of their awesome staff (rocking out in the Loudmouth Gear of course)!

There were promotions and samplings on every hole: Carlsberg, Appleton Estate Jamaica Rum, Callaway Golf and Molson Coors. Everyone who went said it was a wonderful 2 days and all the proceeds went to the John Howard Society of Hamilton, Burlington & Area and PROJECT Share. Not only did everyone get a pair of their own Loudmouth shorts but 4 golfers randomly chosen got to play against John Daly the next day! What fun! Hope to see you all there next year with a smile on your face and some crazy pattern on your pants.

Niagara Falls Packages

Sometimes when you take a vacation, you don’t want to have to plan out exactly what it is your going to do. You have to sit online and research different activities going on and buy tickets ahead of time, who wants that? Well we have the answer! Besides keeping updated on Niagara Falls through this blog, the Best Western Plus Cairn Croft facebook page and @PostcardNiagar on twitter… The hotel also offers some really great packages for the entire family whether winter, spring, summer or fall! From a King Henry VIII Feast in our very own Oak Room to some Dinner Theatre, make sure you check us out on your next trip to Niagara Falls!

The Icewine Festival

The Best Western Plus Cairn Croft Hotel is excited for the Icewine Festival this year! Start off the Icewine Festival in Niagara with ‘Icewine Unveiled: a Masquerade Gala’ which will be showcasing wine from over 30 wineries across Ontario, as well as the largest tasting of internationally acclaimed ice wines. Complete with a silent auction and a delicious meal created by Niagara chefs, this Gala is for those serious about their wine for $175/ticket.

There are so many different events to experience during this festival. Each winery has their own spin on how to celebrate the ice wine festival and each will be wonderful. For me to speak about all of them would be nuts, so I’ll let you decide which ones sound appealing to you. There is a great Discovery Pass that you can purchase for $30, which will allow you to choose 6 events at different wineries. You can also pay for each event separately.

We look forward to hearing from you about what events you have tried! Post them on our facebook!

Candy Cane Lane Run

The 7th Annual Candy Cane Lane Run that took place on November 20 was a complete success. Having been used as a way to promote both indoor/outdoor physical activity and healthy lifestyles, it was also able to raise food and cash donations for the Project S.H.A.R.E Christmas Basket Program.

Runners from across the Niagara Region, surrounding regions, and Western New Yorkers took part in this amazing 5km run; starting and ending at the BEST WESTERN PLUS Cairn Croft Hotel. Not only did the participants get to enjoy the day with their family and friends, it was also an opportunity to give back to Project S.H.A.R.E. Whether you were competing for fun or competing for the prize, everyone in my mind was a winner.

I hope you all enjoyed yourself, and if you were not able to make it maybe you might make it out next year!!!

Flying Saucer..It’s outta this world!

There are so many options for dining in Niagara Falls but you gotta try this! From the outside it looks like a dive, but the food alone is to die for; located just down the street from the Best Western Plus Cairn Croft Hotel on Lundy’s Lane. If you are visiting Niagara Falls or live in the area and have never tried it, the turkey/gravy sub is a must from The Flying Saucer. This delicious, homemade sub can get a little messy, but I am sure you will be licking your plate clean after one bite. When we ordered in for lunch one day, it reminded us all of the day after Thanksgiving when you get to make your own turkey sub with your own gravy… but this is better!

One word: YUMMY. They even deliver! Could be a great eat even late!
