Everyone knows that mothers deserve a special day for all the hard work that they do for their children and finding some just as special to do with them on Mother’s Day can be difficult. This year the McFarland House is hosting a special Mother’s Day Afternoon Tea on Sunday May 13th, however after reading the menu it sounds more like a feast. Serving everything from prime rib to parmesan crusted salmon and finishing the meal off with various kinds of cheese cake. Not to mention there will be complimentary mimosas at 1:00 (my kind of tea party). This sounds like a wonderful event to take in the traditional beauty of the McFarland House, enjoy a delicious meal and most of all enjoy the company of your mom. Tickets for the event are $28.50 and can be purchased over the phone (304-263-1890) or online.
An authentic Italian dinner right in Niagara Falls can be found in this wonderful restaurant down the road from BEST WESTERN PLUS Cairn Croft Hotel on Ferry St, called Napoli. Napoli offers a quiet, delightful, delicious dining experience as I found out when I went with my family. With old family recipes and homemade ingredients, no matter what you choose on the menu, you will not be disappointed.
I am a sucker for a good pizza. My choice? The Italiana. With mozzarella, goat cheese, roasted red peppers, tomatoes and arugula, this pizza took me back to my family vacation around Italy, for a reasonable price (pizza’s range from $8.50 to $19). Sipping on a glass of Chianti and enjoying his Vitello di Parmigiano (veal parmesan) my dad said to me “we have to go back to Italy.” Thank-you Napoli!
Who knew that the best won ton soup that you will ever have lies just inside a donut shop? My friends and I discovered Country Fresh Donuts on Victoria Ave late one night in high school and we have been going back ever since.
This little coffee shop is owned by a lovely Chinese family, Mary, the mother, is often found behind the counter. The location may not be the best, there are only a few tables lining the window and the décor is less than impressive but none of that matters the moment you taste the soup. You can choose from hot and sour (with or without pork) and won ton soup. I’m a won ton girl. This homemade soup has huge won tons and big chunks of pork all surrounded by an amazing won ton broth. Have it there or take it to go, it’s equally delicious either way. Mary will bring a bowl of chow mien noodles out with your soup to munch on separately or add to the soup. And if you wanna kick things up a notch? You must try the Sriracha hot sauce. WARNING! Add small amounts at first to be sure you don’t make it too hot. It’s serious stuff.
All of this deliciousness can be yours for $2.75 for a small and $4.19 for a large. I’m not joking when I say this is the best… BEST wonton soup I have ever had. Oh and there are donuts and coffee available but that’s not important. This is Niagara’s hidden gem, make sure you try it when you visit Niagara!
There are so many options for dining in Niagara Falls but you gotta try this! From the outside it looks like a dive, but the food alone is to die for; located just down the street from the Best Western Plus Cairn Croft Hotel on Lundy’s Lane. If you are visiting Niagara Falls or live in the area and have never tried it, the turkey/gravy sub is a must from The Flying Saucer. This delicious, homemade sub can get a little messy, but I am sure you will be licking your plate clean after one bite. When we ordered in for lunch one day, it reminded us all of the day after Thanksgiving when you get to make your own turkey sub with your own gravy… but this is better!
One word: YUMMY. They even deliver! Could be a great eat even late!
Syndicate is a local bar located near the Best Western Plus Cairn Croft Hotel—owned by the popular Taps Brewery—which features Niagara made beer. From light lagers to delicious reds and cream ales, this bar and grill will change the way you enjoy beer.
But this is not the only thing Syndicate offers; great dinner selections (3 courses) starting as low at $20, or try their other lunch and dinner selections. Hayley and I decided that we wanted wings and we must have chosen the right day because we were able to get 2lbs of medium wings with a pitcher or beer for $15 plus taxes. Now that’s a good deal!
So, if you’re looking for a relaxed patio bar to chill with friends, or a cool place to gab with family and enjoy great food and local beer, you must check out Syndicate. It’s definitely the place to be!
Most people think that golf courses are off limits unless they golf, but this is certainly not true. Coming from a girl who yells “fore” or misses the ball more than she hits it, golf courses are always trying to entice locals and travellers to stop in, eat, or even try playing a round (if they are up for it). Many hotels also offer great golf packages that allow travellers and locals to play a round of golf and enjoy a delicious meal. Whirlpool is one of those golf courses. That is why Hayley and I decided to try out Whirlpool and see what their dining was like.
Stepping into the pro-shop you could definately tell that we were not “golfers,” but the employees were very accommodating and willing to help us with anything we needed. They even showed us to the dining area; it was beautiful. We could either sit in the shade of the dining room or sit closer to the outside in the sun. Hayley and I decided that we would sit in the sun to enjoy our meals.
We started with crab-cakes as a starter. They were delicious– I could have ordered plate after plate of those delicious crab cakes, but I know I needed to try something else. So Hayley decided on a turkey wrap and I tried the Canadian burger. One word…Delicious! We were both very happy with our orders, as well as the service.
Whirlpool is not the only golf course that you can enjoy Niagara Falls dining. All the Niagara golf courses have very interesting and delicious dishes that anyone can choose from–whether you’re a golfer or not! So next time your looking for a great place to eat, why not check out a golf course? They will not let you down.
Nothing is better than an ice cream on a hot summer day, therefore Hayley and I went out to search for the best ice cream in Niagara. Hayley had suggested we go to the Avondale Dairy Bar. So we got into “Bertha” (my mini-van) and began to travel to ice cream heaven. This famous ice cream parlour is found in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
With a slight right turn we arrived at our destination. I could not contain my excitement for one more moment. As soon as we entered the ice cream parlour I race to get in line and decide on the flavour of ice cream I want to get. I decide on mint chocolate chip; my very favourite ice cream flavour. As the ice cream dipped down my hands in the hot summer heat I felt just like a kid again.
Along with the array of ice cream flavours and the seating areas inside and outside the parlour, Avondale Dairy Bar also had swing sets for the kids to enjoy—even though we are no longer kids it was important for us to swing and eat our ice cream at the same time.
After cleaning myself up and throwing away my napkins, it was time to leave. Although I was sad to leave, I was excited to visit again, which I am sure will happen more than once this summer. It is important to make one of the things you do in Niagara Falls, Avondale Dairy Bar.
You will never see a more beautiful place than Port Dalhousie, unless you’re travelling to Niagara Falls. Port Dalhousie is a great place to bring your family, enjoy the beaches, or even whet your palette at many of the main street and beach front restaurants. Hayley and I enjoyed dipping our toes into the not-so-warm lake (well I did, Hayley was being a bit of a chicken), as well as wiggling our toes in the warm beach sand. We also had the pleasure of enjoying Port Dalhousie dining during our lunch hour…we chose Kilt and Clover.
Kilt and Cover had an amazing selection of entrees from fish and chips, burgers, and clubs. Hayley found it important to test out their fish and chips and I stuck to my favourite the club wrap; both amazing dishes with some ice cold pints to wash it down with.
It is important if you’re looking for things to do in Niagara Falls to check out Port. So pack a nice picnic lunch, or have a meal at one of the main street restaurants, you don’t want to miss out on this one.
